About

Since 1979, we’ve been dedicated to volunteer literacy programs statewide, empowering adults and out-of-school teens to enhance their literacy skills. Literacy Volunteers of Illinois • Jump Start • On the Road to Literacy • VOCAL AmeriCorps • Resources • Join the movement. • Testimonials • Our Funders We’re on a mission to transform lives through literacy. We tutor and mentor out-of-school teens at Illinois Youth Centers under the Department of Juvenile Justice. We organize a day-long conference in April for volunteer tutors, adult educators, and adult learners. We recruit, place, and train Literacy Specialists in adult literacy programs throughout the state. Our curated learning collection offers practical strategies, expert research, and skill-building tools to help you meet learners where they are. Locate essential materials to support VOCAL AmeriCorps members in tracking service, accessing resources, and preparing for life after service. Find a literacy program near you to volunteer your time, share your skills, and support lifelong learning for out-of-school youth and adults. Literacy builds confidence, connection, and opportunity. Together, we open doors for adults and out-of-school teens. Tutoring is more than helping with learning—it’s demonstrating what normal, healthy human interactions look like—no intimidation, no name-calling, and lots of encouragement. This was a nice day, what a fun little conference. Well organized, great city officials and community leaders. Wide range of presentations. I loved the connection with the State of Illinois!
