We offer different art forms that show clients how movement can build character and calm the mind. We work to establish the connection that challenging feelings can be regulated by moving our body in a variety of expressive ways. This is not only the road to self discovery but also a way to a more fulfilling life and the road to longevity. The National Institute of Health found that in adolescents and young adults, suicide rates are 2–4 times higher in males than in females. Boys are trailing behind in academics, and most mass shootings in our country are done by young men. It all bares the question what expressive outlets are we giving boys. Our best answer for boys so far have been basketball, baseball, soccer, and Football. These are highly competitive sports, with winners and losers, accompanied by hyper involved parents often screaming on the sidelines. Our art forms are anchored in community, instructions are done in a smaller intimate environment encouraging vulnerability. Let boys develop leadership while building a relationship with big feelings like success and loss in a nurturing environment. We are home to one of the few female led martial arts academies in the country. Our lead teacher Mestra Dana ‘Minha Velha’ Maman is the first female master teacher in her lineage. She always talks about how she loved movement as a young girl but never connected with the movement options that were available for her. Dance and gymnastics is done in short, sparkly cloths, with movements that are often hyper sensual which many girls do not necessarily connect with.
